Kinneil Estate, Bo'ness, Falkirk

Another walk we did last week was around the Kinneil Estate at Bo'ness. There's free car parking and the grounds are free too. It's a compact site (approx. 2 miles around the perimeter) but one that's steeped in history. In addition to the house itself which can be visited on open days, there's a section of the remains of the Antonine Wall and a Roman fortlet, the ruined 12th century Kinneil Parish Church and evidence of the links to the inventor James Watt. You'll also find a very interesting free museum, focussed on the history of the estate and surrounding area. NB the house and museum are not dog friendly.

It's a varied walk around the estate, taking in some wide open spaces for the dogs to have a good run around, woodland paths, a couple of attractive ponds that are home to a variety of birds and there are some good views out to the River Forth too. The long distance John Muir Way also passes through the estate.

Off the main paths, it can be a bit muddy and at this time of year, I'd keep dogs out of the ponds due to the risk of blue green algae. There are also mountain biking areas in the main woods, so avoid straying into those. Another hazard to watch out for is the large rapeseed field that is accessible from the estate on the other side of the curling pond. Rapeseed can be harmful to dogs, so it's wise to keep them out of there if you walk in that area.

Information is current as of our last visit in May 2023. All images can be clicked / tapped to enlarge. Further information about the estate can be found on the Kinneil Estate website here.

Here are a few photos from our visit:
