The West Highland Way North (part 2): Victoria Bridge, Argyll and Bute towards Ba Bridge, Highland

A wintry walk on the West Highland Way (click/tap to enlarge)

Last October we started walking the north section of the West Highland Way from Bridge of Orchy to Fort William. Our October walk took us from Bridge of Orchy to Victoria Bridge and you can read about that here. Last week we walked two more parts of this section and this article covers the first of them: from Victoria Bridge out towards Ba Bridge on Rannoch Moor. It's an easy there and back route of approximately 3.7 miles each way (approx. 7.4 miles total), with a slight incline for much of the way out.

There are often quite a few frozen pools around in the winter, so keep an eye on dogs in case they are tempted to run onto the ice. Also, do watch the winter weather of course in terms of driving there and back and ensure that the driving conditions are suitable on the day. You'll find the walking route map, GPX navigation file and link to the car park at Victoria Bridge, at the end of the article. All images can be clicked/tapped to enlarge.

The scenery this time of year is spectacular with the snow capped mountains providing a beautiful backdrop. Here are some of the photo highlights.

Not much snow to be seen at the start of the route. As ever, the boys are stupidly excited!

The snowy mountains soon come into view behind Loch Tulla

Some light snow starts to fall and Tommy looks like he's trying to catch a flake!

Tommy's quite happy in his little fleece along the wintry route!

The scenery is ever more beautiful as the route progresses

Lots of these snowy, frozen pools along the way

Our route ends here where the path opens up and continues across the moor. The frozen Lochan Mhic Pheadair Ruaidh can be seen to the right. Time to turn around and head back to the car park.

Jasper still has plenty of energy for running around on the return journey!

Happy New Year!

Just a quick post to wish you all a Happy New Year. Still snow to be found off and on in the hills and higher ground here. We took a trip out to Sheriffmuir Big Wood again on New Years Day and were met with a gloomy, atmospheric and snowy scene!

Take care driving up there in wintry conditions as the single track roads can be icy/snowy. It's usually better to come up from Dunblane and the road was easily passable with care from that direction when we visited. At times though, the roads can be dangerous / impassable, especially from other directions.

Here are a few photos from our walk:

It's Jasper's favourite weather!
