The West Highland Way North (part 4)-South from Glencoe Mountain Resort, Highland

At the end of last month, we took another trip up to Glencoe to walk the next part of the north section of the West Highland Way (WHW). Like the previous walk, we walked this one south down Rannoch Moor, returning north, as parking was easier that way around. Our walk starts from the large Glencoe Mountain Resort car park. The car park is free, though they do appreciate a donation.

This leg of our WHW adventure is fairly short, covering a distance of approximately 2.5 miles each way. We however doubled that, as we walked further south down the path covering some of the route we walked last time, before turning off along an ATV track into a gorgeous, picturesque valley.

It's an especially beautiful area for walking and there was the added bonus of the mountains still having some snow on them. In fact, we even had some light snowfall accompanying us on our walk back to the resort.

The WHW itself is a good, solid path but do be aware that the path that connects to it from the resort is pretty boggy after rainfall. Alternatively, you can walk the dogleg down the road and pick up the WHW from there.

If you decide to take the detour along the ATV track into the valley, bear in mind that the route is especially boggy. My photos seem to do a good job of disguising that but trust me, it's was very wet! The path also crosses the burn multiple times. We found a suitable place to get over the first crossing by hopping some stones but we didn't go any further than the second crossing as it involved a bit of paddling! As you would expect we saw a handful of people on the WHW itself but the valley is splendidly isolated and we had the whole area to ourselves. An idyllic, peaceful place and good for the soul as they say!

Information in this article is current as of our last visit in March 2023. You will find a link to the car park on Google Maps, along with a map of the route, at the end of the article. All images can be clicked / tapped to enlarge.

The scenery definitely makes walking the sodden track worthwhile!

We didn't walk much further on as we didn't fancy paddling across the burn, so it was time to head back
