Cashel Forest, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Stirling

We recently took a trip out to Cashel Forest in the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The forest is located a few miles past Balmaha on the B837 towards Rowardennan. There's a parking charge of £3 which goes towards the upkeep of the forest.

Until the end of March 2023, the path up nearby Conic Hill is closed for repair work and Cashel offers a great alternative with similarly impressive views. There are also far fewer visitors to Cashel compared to Conic Hill, which can be pretty busy. There are various well waymarked routes that can be undertaken but we opted for the longest: the black route. This circular walk (anticlockwise is recommended) is approximately 4 miles and fairly strenuous on the way out with quite a long uphill section. Aside from the physical effort, we found the path to be fine in the dry but I would exercise caution in bad weather as it's likely to be muddy / slippery.

There are fantastic views over Loch Lomond and its islands and a few specific viewpoints where you can stop for a rest and take in the scenery. I wouldn't bother with the detour to Queen's View at the northernmost point of the walk. There are too many trees to afford a decent view and the other viewpoints are much better.

Further details can be found at the Cashel Forest and See Loch Lomond websites. NB the Cashel Forest website seems to be down as of the time of writing.

Information in this article is current as of our last visit in March 2023. All images can be clicked / tapped to enlarge.

We were treated to some bright sunshine when we visited, which did make for some rather hazy photos but here are a few highlights:
