Lady Mary's Walk, Crieff, Perth and Kinross

Lady Mary's Walk is a lovely tree-lined avenue along the River Earn in Crieff, Perth and Kinross. You'll find mature oak, beech, lime and sweet chestnut trees along the route. It's particularly nice in the autumn with all the brown and gold coloured leaves and was still very picturesque when we last visited earlier this month. The avenue dates back to 1815 and was put in place by Sir Patrick  Murray of Ochtertyre, a local landowner. It became a favourite walk of his daughter Lady Mary Murray and the avenue thus adopted her name.

We took a shortish route this time and walked a 2 mile partially circular trail. You can walk further along Lady Mary's Walk if desired and take the longer circular route back via Laggan Road or even back over Laggan Hill. The hill trail is pretty muddy this time of year though if I recall correctly. You can see these paths on the map at the bottom of the article.

Watch out for parts of the River Earn that can be too fast flowing for doggies. Also be aware that after very heavy rain, parts of the route along Turret Burn can be waterlogged or even submerged. Turret Burn can be bypassed if need be, by following the route down on to Lady Mary's Walk from Laggan Road instead.

Our route starts from the Macrosty Park car park on Turretbank Road. At present there are major roadworks being undertaken on Turretbank Road and you can only get to the car park from the west side (follow Diversion signs). You'll find a link to the car park on Google Maps, route maps and GPX navigational file at the end of the article. Information is current as of our last visit in December 2022. The park offers an immediate opportunity for the dogs to get a good run around; handy since Jasper and Tommy are always hugely excited to get somewhere and it's good for them to be able to blow off some steam straight away! Incidentally, the park itself is a great place to take the dogs for a shorter walk.

We leave the park via the bridge over Turret Burn and it's back on the lead towards the road.

Crossing over Turretbank Road, we head down the path into Turretbank Woods and along Turret Burn. Time for the dogs to get off the lead and have a run around again. The route narrows and continues to follow the burn.

Time for a splash about in the shallow water of Turret Burn!

The path leaves Turret Burn and continues along the River Earn.

We soon join the main Lady Mary's Walk, turning left along it. We didn't follow the avenue all the way to the end today but you can walk to the end of the avenue or follow one of the longer routes back if desired.

End of our route for today and time to head back

The bare, gnarled and contorted trees here lend a dramatic atmosphere to Lady Mary's Walk

The return path runs straight back along the avenue, curves left over a bridge and up to Laggan Road, rather than returning back along the burn. Turn right on Laggan Road and follow it to the end. At the T-junction, turn right on Turretbank Road, cross over the road bridge and back down to the car park.
